You write: "Maybe we have reached the point where it would be worth re-examining the length that patents should be valid."

Lovely understatement. I believe the point was reached, a colony was built, fortunes were made, and civilization collapsed already.

The problem with patents in the US is that the issuer and enforcer of patents is not a neutral or honest broker in the process. The public sector now stands for little more than the ongoing enrichment and self promotion of the public sector. Patents are a perfect tool in this regard especially when used against foreign companies. Innovators must apply to public servants to protect their idea - with a fee. Any idea no matter how trivial is accepted - with a fee. The public sector then provides adjudication and enforcement mechanisms - with a fee - so that others pay to fix issues caused by poor public policy. The value producers forced into dependency on government - with a fee.

But it doesn't end there. The public sector is also rewarded by the increase in GDP that all these costs represent - money for nothing, few inputs, lots of outputs - it looks great on reports and allows greater debt based spending on public servants. Win:Win.

The issuing of patents is what is broken.
eg.1 Since man first sat on a flat rock, with sharp corners, man has "rounded rectangular shapes" . How could a patent be granted for such idiocy?

eg.2 Ohms law states P=IE ( power is directly proportional to current and voltage).
A law of physics, yet a patent was granted for the technique of "lowering the battery voltage to extend battery life".

The list is endless...

Find some semi educated personnel to staff the patent office!
Review and toss the ridiculous patents.
